THE WORK

A reef built from discarded plastic, lit by lasers

The sculpture is made entirely of recycled plastic — the kind that passes through a household in a month without anyone noticing. Individual pieces accumulate into a single mass. Lasers projected across it refract and reflect through the plastic, animated to a custom soundtrack, so the whole thing reads as living tissue rather than waste. It grew out of research into how light behaves through plastic: transparency, density, the way illumination changes the material's apparent form.

I led this one — concept, driving the team, and the animation. TouchDesigner patches built with another student; sound by a friend from college. Installed outdoors at Carrer Emilia Coranty 40 in Poblenou for Llum BCN 2024.

Exposed Infrastructure & Material Refraction

The physical structure was engineered entirely from discarded, repurposed, and rejected plastics. Rather than hiding the raw waste, the layers of material were woven into impossible volumetric forms, functioning as an active research study on light refraction — how custom, dynamic electronic light sources split, warp, and transform when passing through varied plastic densities.

Synthetic Invasion

Passersby were invited to walk underneath the looming synthetic framework, feeling the tension between a playful luminescent glow and the dystopian reality of the physical plastic consumption.
